School Safety Design

Project Overview

PTM Consultants are proud to be working with Auckland Transport to deliver reactive school safety investigations and designs across Tāmaki Makaurau. With school communities raising safety concerns daily, this programme provides a flexible framework that allows us to respond quickly, design practical interventions, and make journeys safer for students.

As the lead designers, PTM are responsible for assessing risk, developing design options, and guiding each project through consultation and approvals. Our team is supported by specialist inputs when required, ensuring every intervention is technically sound, context- sensitive, and aligned with AT's standards.

Our work includes:

• Desktop investigations & site visits – identifying risks, reviewing sightlines, and confirming design constraints.
• Concept & scheme designs – preparing options for crossings, kerb extensions, pram ramps, signage, and markings.
• Safety in Design & Resolutions – progressing designs through DRP, consultation, and TCC approvals.
• Construction design support – ensuring treatments are ready for delivery on the ground.

Typical safety improvements delivered:

• New Kea crossings and raised zebra crossings
• Safer kerb extensions and pram crossings
• Upgraded signage and pavement markings
• Traffic calming through low-cost line-marking and layout changes

This work reflects PTM's commitment to keeping tamariki safe on their way to and from school, while balancing efficiency, affordability, and design quality.
